About Peace Corps

Peace Corps is a volunteer organization started in 1961 and was intended for Americans to help people around the world.  Peace Corps Volunteers work on a grassroots level, helping local populations. Grassroots means just that, working at the roots of a community to bring about a stronger, more sustainable livelihood.  Peace Corps has volunteers in 139 countries.  In every country and in every community that volunteers serve in, the countries have requested and welcomed Peace Corps Volunteers into their communities, villages, and customs.

The Peace Corps Mission:

To promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:
To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women
To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served
To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
